What is The Showdown? The Showdown is a one of a kind event in Canada that brings together top competitors from three performance horse disciplines; Reining, Cutting and Working Cowhorse. This brand-new, action-packed western performance horse event is bringing together the best of the best for a one-day, high-stakes competition featuring 8 elite teams competing all under one roof. More than just a showcase of top talent, The Showdown celebrates western heritage and community, bringing fans together for an unforgettable day of sport and connection.
-
What is Reining?Reining is a western riding competition where horse and rider perform a precise pattern of movements designed to showcase the horse’s athleticism, training, and responsiveness. Riders guide their horses through a pattern of fast spins, sliding stops, and smooth lead changes — all at a gallop. It’s about precision, control, and making it look effortless.
-
What is Cutting?Cutting is a western performance horse event where a rider and horse work together to separate a single cow from a herd and prevent it from returning. Once the cow is "cut," the rider drops the reins and the horse takes over, using instinct and agility to mirror the cow’s every move. The goal is to demonstrate the horse’s natural cow sense, quick reactions, and ability to work independently — all while keeping the cow under control.
-
What is Working Cowhorse?Working Cowhorse is a western performance event that combines the finesse of reining with the grit of cow work. Riders guide their horses through a precise reining pattern, then turn up the intensity by working a single cow — controlling it down the fence, turning it back, and circling it at speed. The event showcases a horse’s versatility, combining control, athleticism, and instinct in one thrilling, fast-paced competition.
-
How do competitors qualify for The Showdown?Competitors qualify for The Showdown based on their Canadian earnings in Reining, Working Cow Horse, and Cutting throughout the year. The top earners in each discipline are invited to ensure that The Showdown features the best talent in the country.
-
How are teams formed for The Showdown? For the inaugural event, teams are formed by random draw. Each of the 8 teams includes one competitor from each discipline—Reining, Working Cow Horse, and Cutting—creating a unique and exciting mix of top talent.
-
Where is The Showdown being held? The Showdown will take place at the Nutrien Western Event Centre, located at the Calgary Stampede grounds in Calgary, Alberta. This world-class facility is one of Canada’s premier venues for western performance horse events, providing the perfect stage for a high-caliber competition like The Showdown.
